Stricter regulations for vehicle number plate shops

Jamshedpur: The Jamshedpur Police are set to conduct a meeting with vehicle number registration shopkeepers to implement new guidelines. Under these directives, vehicle owners will be required to provide their Registration Certificate (RC) book, a photocopy of their identity card, and contact number to the shopkeeper before having their number plates written. Shopkeepers will record these details in their registers and maintain a comprehensive database.

District Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kishore Kaushal has instructed all police station officers to gather information about shopkeepers responsible for registering vehicle numbers. Following this, the police will meet with these shopkeepers to develop a strategy.

SSP Kishore Kaushal explained that shopkeepers will be instructed to maintain a register containing essential information about individuals who seek to register vehicle numbers. This register will include data on the vehicle’s RC, the person registering the number, their contact number, and a copy of their identity card. Law enforcement authorities will periodically review these registers. This proactive approach is expected to contribute to a decrease in criminal activities within the city.

The SSP further noted that criminals often change the number plates of vehicles used in criminal activities. These number plates are typically created in such shops. Presently, shopkeepers often manufacture vehicle number plates without verifying the authenticity of the RC. This new system aims to provide law enforcement with essential information about these vehicles, aiding in criminal apprehension. Similar vehicles are frequently employed in various crimes, including snatching incidents.

Verification procedures for the city’s number plate-making shops are slated to begin soon. Additionally, SSP Kishore Kaushal emphasized that there are numerous shops in the city specializing in vehicle modifications. Under the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, those involved in vehicle modification may face fines ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh. The police will take action against these shops and are assessing the number of modification shops operating in the city.
