New Delhi (IANS): Following the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) landmark decision to cancel the NEET-UG 2026 examination, medical aspirants across India have expressed a mix of relief and resentment. While many students in hubs like Jodhpur and Jammu welcomed the move as “justice for honest candidates,” they also slammed the recurring administrative failures that have put their mental health and futures at risk.
Students in Rajasthan: “A Second Chance for Justice”
In Jodhpur, a major coaching centre hub, the mood was one of cautious optimism. Aspirants who spent years preparing for the May 3 exam felt that allowing the results to stand would have validated those who benefited from the alleged paper leak.
- Fairness First: “It would be unfair for students who appeared for the exam honestly if NEET-UG 2026 was not scrapped,” one aspirant said.
- Disheartening Discovery: Another student noted that while the leak was “disheartening,” the re-test provides a clean slate to achieve what they truly deserve based on merit.
Jammu Aspirants: “A Failure of the System”
The reaction in Jammu was more critical of the NTA’s operational integrity. Students pointed out that this is not an isolated incident, referencing the massive controversies and high scores of 2024.
- Systemic Failure: “This is the failure of the NTA and the administration. Paper leaks are becoming a recurring nightmare,” an aspirant remarked.
- Mental Health Concerns: Many voiced the toll this takes on teenagers who sacrifice two years of their social lives for a “respected profession.” The prospect of restarting the gruelling preparation cycle is seen as a heavy psychological burden.
The NTA Statement
The NTA confirmed the cancellation after law enforcement and central agencies provided “investigative findings” that compromised the transparency of the May 3 test. With the approval of the Government of India, the agency decided that the current process “could not be allowed to stand.”
While the registration data from the May cycle remains valid, the NTA has yet to notify the specific dates for the nationwide re-conduct of the examination.
