NDRF conducts session on chemical disaster prevention

Jamshedpur, Oct 28: National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) under the aegis of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Wednesday conducted session on chemical disaster at TMDC Hall in XLRI.  

Consultants from NDMA New Delhi Shivaji Singh and A. K Tuteja along with NDMA official for Jharkhand-Bihar Col Sanjiv Srivastava were present on the occasion.

“The first session discussed strategies to cope with chemical disasters and parameters for holding mock-drills as laid out by the consultants,” said East Singhbhum additional deputy commissioner Sunil Kumar.

The mock-drill which will be held on October 29 and 30 will be attended by officials of all government departments including education, health, drinking water and sanitation department, state electricity board, road, local urban bodies and Jusco and corporate sectors like Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tinplate and public sector units like Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL).

The move assumes significance in a city which has witnessed chlorine gas leakage from water treatment plant from Tata Motors creating panic amongst residents of Truck Park in Telco in May 2008 and mixture of gases in the LD-gas holder had led to auto-ignition had caused an explosion inside Tata Steel works causing one casualty and injury to 10 others in November 2013.

Around 50 members from 9th battalion of NDRF Patna have already arrived in city along with necessary equipments and kits for the mock-drills.

“This is the first such session on chemical disaster by NDRF.  After Jamshedpur we have plans to conduct similar sessions in other cities of Jharkhand like Bokaro, Dhanbad and Ranchi. Earlier, Jharkhand was looked after by NDRF Calcutta but since October 7 Jharkhand is being looked after by NDRF Patna,” said assistant commandant NDRF 9th battalion, Hari Charan Prasad.

Officer of Jharkhand Disaster Management Sanjay Srivastav said, keeping in mind the natural and industrial calamity in Jamshedpur, Industrial disaster management corridor will be set up.

Pankaj Kumar has been chosen as District Disaster Management Officer. State government has ordered the same. Pankaj will soon take charge of the office.

NDRF team will conduct mock drills at Tata Steel works, Sonari Airport, MGM Hospital and Red Cross Bhawan.

For the mock drill at four locations of Jamshedpur preparations have been made were a blueprint have been prepared under the supervision of ADC.
