Over 300 players from across India to compete from December 16

Jamshedpur: A grand trophy reveal and press briefing was held on Sunday for the upcoming National Under-19 Chess Championship 2025, which will be organised from December 16 to 24 at Wave International Resort on NH-33. The championship is being hosted by the Seraikela-Kharsawan District Chess Association and is being described as a historic moment for the district.

Addressing the media, the organisers informed that more than 300 young chess players from different states across India will take part in the prestigious national-level competition. In the boys’ category, around 45 rated players have registered, with the highest number of entries coming from West Bengal and Maharashtra. The girls’ category will feature approximately 31 rated players, with maximum participation from Jharkhand and Maharashtra. The event will also see the participation of several International Masters, FIDE Masters and national-level players, significantly raising the standard of competition.

The chief guest of the programme, MLA Saryu Roy, said chess plays an important role in developing discipline, patience and logical thinking among children. He added that hosting a national Under-19 championship in a district like Seraikela-Kharsawan is a matter of pride and will provide a strong national platform for local talent.

Patron Shambhunath Singh praised the District Chess Association for consistently organising national-level tournaments, stating that it reflects the district’s strong organisational ability and commitment to promoting sports. He expressed confidence that even bigger events could be hosted in the future.

Manoj Singh, in his address, said chess is an excellent medium for mental development and noted that the large participation in the championship proves Jharkhand’s growing presence on the national chess map. Pratap Aditya Singh Deo added that the Under-19 championship serves as a vital platform from which future national and international players emerge.

Information about the event mascot, ‘Gajraj’, was also shared. Organisers said the mascot symbolises patience, balance and foresight in chess and reflects Jharkhand’s cultural identity. ‘Gajraj’ was first launched at Sarla Birla University, Ranchi, and later at the office of the Minister of State for Defence.

Members of the Seraikela-Kharsawan and East Singhbhum District Chess Associations were also present at the event.
