Bhopal (IANS): The Madhya Pradesh government on Friday recommended that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) take over the probe into the death of Twisha Sharma.
In an official statement issued Friday, the state Home Department confirmed it has sent communication to the Centre seeking the transfer.
Twisha Sharma died at Bag Mugalia Extension in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal on May 12. The government statement noted that Katara Hills police had already registered a criminal complaint. The FIR includes charges under Sections 80(2), 85, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
“The government proposes to transfer the investigation of the case related to the dowry death incident at Bag Mugalia Extension, Katara Hills, Bhopal, dated May 12, 2026, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),” the statement said.
The state government further clarified that it granted consent under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946. This action allows members of the Delhi Special Police Establishment—under which the CBI functions—to exercise powers and jurisdiction across Madhya Pradesh specifically to investigate this case.
“The Madhya Pradesh government has accorded consent to extend the powers and jurisdiction of the members of the Delhi Special Police Establishment in the entire state to investigate the matter,” the statement added.
The notification also stated that the government has given consent for the CBI to investigate the alleged offence, including any linked abetment and criminal conspiracy. This development occurred days after Twisha’s family met Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to request a transparent investigation by the CBI.
Twisha Sharma’s death has triggered widespread discussion and allegations of dowry harassment, leading to demands from various quarters for an independent probe.
Observers see the government’s move to transfer the investigation as a significant step to ensure a fair and transparent inquiry. The CBI will likely take over the case formally once it completes procedural formalities and receives relevant documents from the Madhya Pradesh Police.
