Back to back western disturbances keep temperatures in check in Jharkhand
Jamshedpur: The morning chill in Jamshedpur continues to persist, with temperatures dipping further on Friday. The minimum temperature recorded was 10.2°C, a 2-degree drop compared to Thursday.
Despite the cold start, sunshine during the day provided some relief to residents. According to the weather department, the current pattern is expected to continue, with similar temperatures in the coming days. Mornings are likely to remain colder.
Meanwhile, successive Western Disturbances passing through northern India have tempered the drop in temperatures across Jharkhand, keeping the mercury levels slightly elevated compared to the usual winter chill. These weather systems have disrupted the free flow of the north-westerly winds, which are typically responsible for bringing down temperatures in the region.
Over the past 48 hours, the minimum temperature across most districts of Jharkhand has hovered between 10 to 12 degrees Celsius, providing some respite from extreme cold conditions.
In the state capital, Ranchi, the minimum temperature was recorded at 10.6 degrees Celsius, while Jamshedpur experienced a slightly cooler morning with the mercury dipping to 10.2 degrees. Daltonganj, another key town, registered 11.6 degrees Celsius, and Bokaro’s minimum stood at 12.1 degrees.
The coldest spot in the state today was Khunti, where the temperature dropped to a chilling 8.5 degrees Celsius. Other districts such as Gumla and Lohardaga recorded minimum temperatures of 9.5 and 9.6 degrees Celsius, respectively, adding to the overall cool but manageable conditions.
Satellite imagery and meteorological data have highlighted the ongoing activity of the Western Disturbances. A cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan and its neighborhood persists, extending between 3.1 and 4.5 kilometers above mean sea level. Additionally, a trough in the middle and upper tropospheric levels, with its axis positioned at 5.8 kilometers above mean sea level along Longitude 72°E to the north of Latitude 25°N, continues to influence weather patterns.
Further compounding the situation is an induced cyclonic circulation over south Haryana, extending up to 1.5 kilometers above mean sea level. These systems have collectively contributed to the current weather conditions in Jharkhand and surrounding regions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the arrival of two fresh Western Disturbances in the coming days. The first is expected to affect Northwest India starting January 18, while the second is anticipated to make its impact felt from January 22. These systems are likely to further influence temperature trends and weather conditions across northern and eastern parts of the country, including Jharkhand.
The moderated temperature levels, while providing temporary comfort to residents, also underscore the intricate dynamics of winter weather in the region. Farmers, in particular, remain vigilant as fluctuating temperatures could impact crops sensitive to cold stress. Meanwhile, urban areas like Jamshedpur, Ranchi, and Daltonganj continue to experience mild winter mornings, offering a reprieve for citizens.
