Jamshedpur, July 15: East Singhbhum district administration launched an anti-encroachment drive in old civil court and SDO office premises in Sakchi on Monday. A huge police deployment was made to tackle public resistance.

Leading the operation, SDO Dhalbhum Chandan Kumar said the action was meant to remove all unauthorized structures from the old court and SDO office precincts.

He said the encroachers were given warning in advance to remove their belongings from the makeshift shops. He said around 150 structures were demolished and removed from the government land.

After making formal request, the district administration officials also made announcement through public address system (PAS), asking all encroachers to remove their belongings on their own.

During the campaign, several vendors requested the administration to give them some time to remove their belongings.

Acceding to the demand, the administration gave one hour time to them and removed the encroachment thereafter.

Social activist Kedarnath Bharatiya put up protest against administrative action. His demand was however ignored.

District administration had made elaborate arrangement to remove the encroachment. Earlier too, it had cleared Old Court and SDO Office premises of encroachment.

But the encroachers returned to the place again. At present, around 200 people earn their living by using the old court campus as their makeshift office.
