Month-long daily power cuts in Kolhan for maintenance: Prep for summer begins in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, Jan 13: Residents across Kolhan, including Jamshedpur, Mango, Ghatshila, Adityapur, Saraikela, Chakradharpur, and Chaibasa, will face scheduled power cuts of 3-4 hours daily starting next week. The electricity divisions have announced the outages as part of an extensive maintenance drive aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power supply during the peak summer months.

The maintenance initiative, which will span an entire month, involves replacing worn-out wires and outdated equipment across all seven electricity divisions. A survey of feeders has already commenced, and officials have promised to release daily power cut schedules to minimize inconvenience for consumers.

“The work is critical to prevent disruptions during the high-demand summer season. Scheduled outages will ensure efficient and timely maintenance,” said Anand Kaushik, Electrical Executive Engineer, Jamshedpur Electricity Division.

To address concerns over unscheduled disruptions, all executive engineers have been directed to stick to the scheduled timings. “Except for emergencies, there will be no unnecessary outages beyond the allocated maintenance hours. Consumers will be informed in advance,” Kaushik assured.

The electricity department has emphasized that the current demand for power in Kolhan is relatively low, making this the ideal time for maintenance work.

Mango Division leads maintenance efforts

In Mango, surveys of overloaded areas have been completed, and maintenance work is already underway in two sections. “We’ve identified problem areas and have begun upgrades to avoid overload issues during summer,” said Sanjeev Kumar, Electrical Executive Engineer, Mango Electricity Division.

Maintenance activities in Mango are being conducted under the supervision of Electricity SDOs and Junior Engineers. Power supply is being shut down during the day for the work. “This proactive approach is necessary to avoid summer outages that could disrupt daily life,” Kumar added.

All sub-divisions have started surveying feeders and equipment to identify maintenance priorities. The initiative includes plans to address infrastructure weaknesses, ensuring a robust power supply when demand peaks in the coming months.

Residents have expressed mixed reactions to the announcement. While some have welcomed the department’s preventive measures, others have raised concerns about the inconvenience of daily outages. “It’s better to endure short-term disruptions now than face major power cuts in the summer,” said Ravi Prasad, a resident of Adityapur.

With summer just weeks away, Kolhan’s electricity divisions are racing against time to complete the necessary upgrades and deliver on their promise of uninterrupted power supply.
