Ranchi (IANS): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday announced that the Southwest Monsoon 2026 has reached Jharkhand, establishing its northern limit across Chatra. The weather office confirmed that conditions are favourable for the rain system to sweep across all remaining districts of the state over the next 48 hours.
While Jharkhand gears up for a widespread monsoon surge, the meteorological system is simultaneously making rapid progress across the rest of India—advancing into Bihar, Odisha, and Maharashtra, with Mumbai expected to receive its first proper seasonal showers within two days.
Key Highlights for Jharkhand
- Monsoon Entry Line: The active northern edge of the monsoon currently cuts right through Chatra.
- Next 48 Hours: Highly favorable conditions mean the rain system will expand rapidly to cover the rest of Jharkhand.
- Pre-Monsoon Activity: Light to moderate thunderstorms have already registered in isolated pockets, with Topchanchi in Dhanbad recording the highest state rainfall at 40.2 mm in the last 24 hours.
- Temperature Drop: Temperatures are expected to plunge by 2 to 3°C over the next two days as cloudy skies and rainfall take over.
Current Synoptic Situation and Rain Progress
According to the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, a seasonal wind trough and a low-tropospheric cyclonic circulation system near Bihar and adjoining Jharkhand are driving the current moisture push.
Over the past 24 hours, the state witnessed scattered pre-monsoon showers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. While the official entry has brought relief, IMD statistics reveal that the state is currently running on a cumulative rainfall deficit of roughly 56% to 59% for the first three weeks of June. However, the impending 48-hour advancement is expected to significantly narrow this gap as regular showers commence.
National Outlook: Heavy Rain in Northeast, Heatwave in Pockets
Beyond Jharkhand, the Southwest Monsoon is executing a crucial phase of expansion:
- Northeast & West Bengal: Extremely heavy rainfall is battering the sub-Himalayan regions, with West Bengal logging over 21 cm of downpour and Meghalaya preparing for intense spells over the week.
- West Coast: Mumbai and the surrounding areas of Maharashtra are on alert as the Arabian Sea branch of the monsoon strengthens, promising heavy spells in the next two days.
- Contrasting Heatwaves: In stark contrast, neighboring regions like East Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha continue to suffer under severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures peaking over 42°C.
IMD Advisory for Jharkhand Citizens and Farmers
With thunderstorms and gusty winds ranging between 40 and 60 km/h expected to impact the southern and central parts of the state during the transitional phase, the regional authorities have issued specific guidelines:
- Avoid Weak Structures: Citizens are advised to seek shelter indoors during active lighting and intense wind spells.
- Agricultural Guidance: For districts yet to receive deep downpours, light irrigation and shade nets are advised to protect standing crops from the residual day heat.
- Temperature Relief: A temporary break from the humidity is on the horizon, but residents should remain well-hydrated during the afternoon periods as maximum temperatures hover around 35°C to 38°C right before the heavy rains start.
