Mob turns violent, four trucks set on fire

Nine killed and three injured in road mishap at Hatgamharia in West Singhbhum

: In a major road mishap, nine persons were killed and three were seriously injured as a pick-up van on which they were travelling met with unfortunate head on collision at Hatgamharia on the Hatgamharia-Jagannath Road in the neighbouring West Singhbhum district, more than 100 Kms away from here on Monday morning.

According to information, five of the victims were killed on the spot, four others succumbed to their injuries at Jagannathpur Referral Hospital in Jagannathpur and government hospital at Champua.

The victims who were vendors were traveling in an over-loaded passenger van for selling their products at Hatgamharia�s weekly market.

Sources went on to inform that soon after the mishap peeved over the incident the mob of vendors from Jagannathpur turned violent attacked trucks and trailers that were passing through that area. Four trucks were set on fire.

They also ransacked the Jagannathpur Referral Hospital. They even tried to set fire at hospital but police personnel averted another major incident.

As the news spread, Superintendent of police, West Singhbhum, NK Singh rushed to the spot and tried to control the situation.

The agitated vendors also blocked the road. As a result of the blockade the traffic on Jagannathpur-Hatgamharia-Chaibasa route came to standstill.

“I have lost my brother in the mishap. We used to stay at Jagannathpur. He used to sell the readymade garments at weekly haats.

He was going to sell his readymade garments at the haat. But at about 9 am I received ot the information that he was killed in a road mishap on Jagannathpur-Hatgamharia road. We are in state of shock,” said Mohammed Ali, a victim�s kin.

When contacted, Superintendent of police, NK Singh confirmed that five persons were killed on the spot and four others succumbed to their injuries in separate hospitals.

He said three persons who have sustained injuries have been sent to the Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur.

“It is too early to tell anything as to what led to the mishap. But as per our initial investigation the breakdown of the trailer’s might be the cause of the mishap.

We have, however, arrested the driver seized the trailer,” said the SP.
