Jamshedpur: A vibrant blend of tradition, rhythm, and community spirit marked the 30th Sati Ghat Tusu Fair at Tangarsai village in Potka block on Sunday, as thousands of villagers gathered to celebrate Makar Sankranti with customary fervour. The annual fair once again emerged as a major platform for showcasing Jharkhand’s rich folk culture and age-old traditions.

Dressed in colourful traditional attire, villagers arrived in large numbers carrying exquisitely crafted Tusu idols, transforming the venue into a spectacle of art, devotion, and rural heritage. The celebration reflected the deep cultural roots of the region and the strong emotional bond people share with the Tusu festival.

MLA Sanjib Sardar, who attended the event as the chief guest, added to the festive enthusiasm by joining local artists in playing mandar, dhol and nagada. His participation drew loud cheers and applause from the crowd, creating a lively atmosphere and reinforcing the connect between elected representatives and grassroots cultural traditions.

The organising committee felicitated the ten best Tusu idols presented during the fair. The first prize was awarded to the idol from Roladih Tola of Saloydih village, while the remaining selected participants received consolation prizes in recognition of their craftsmanship and creativity.

The awards were distributed by MLA Sanjib Sardar along with former Zila Parishad member Chandrawati Mahato, Panchayat Samiti member Chhabi Das and JMM leader Sunil Mahato. The dignitaries lauded the efforts of villagers in preserving and promoting indigenous cultural practices through such events.

Addressing the gathering, Sardar said the Tusu festival symbolises Jharkhand’s cultural identity, unity, and collective spirit. He emphasised that fairs like the Sati Ghat Tusu Fair play a vital role in connecting the younger generation with their roots and keeping traditional art forms alive.

The fair concluded on a festive note with music, dance, and community interactions, reaffirming the importance of cultural celebrations in strengthening social harmony and preserving Jharkhand’s vibrant folk heritage.
