Jamshedpur, July 7 : With cases if mishaps on the rise at 100-kms-long stretch from Pardih to Baharagora on the NH-33, the police have decided to set temporary barriers and start helmet checking drive as part of preventive measures.
The idea is to reduce the fatal mishaps which have become regular between the stretch on the NH-33 from Pardih along the Jamshedpur to Bahragora in Ghatshila sub-division.
Every month at least a dozen fatal mishaps are taking place between Pardih and Baharagora, mainly due to the ongoing NH-widening project. The latest toll on the said stretch of the NH-33 was the deaths of two youths, who were hit by a speeding truck at Pipla under MGM thana area about 20 kms away from the heart of the city on Saturday evening.
Revealing about the step, East Singhbhum district superintendent of police (Rural) Piyush Pandey pointed out that they are aware of the road mishaps taking place on the NH-33 which is in a widening mode.
Cases of road mishaps at the stretch on National Highway 33 have become a regular affair. During the past four months several mishaps have taken place in which 20 persons have died on the NH-33 a stretch of 20 kilometres. Earlier the traffic was slow as the road of the NH-33 was dotted with potholes, but ever since it was repaired, the vehicle owners tend to drive at high speed.
More in the last one decade the rise of vehicles particularly, four wheelers have registered manifold increase with each family possessing at least, two-wheeler on an average. However, the darker side of the picture is that annually above thousand road accidents are taking place in and around the city and four to five accidents (including small and moderate accidents) daily on an average in which more than 100 odd people are losing their lives.
A traffic official though admitted of lack of technology to detect speed demons but tried to put up a brave front. We admit that we do not have the technology to catch or prosecute speed demons. However, that does not mean that speed restrictions should not be imposed in city in view of the rise in road mishaps, he noted.
