Minor explosion in Tata Steel Jamshedpur plant, two suffer superficial injury

Jamshedpur, Jan 18: Minor explosion with fire
spatters took place at the hot metal pooling pit near TŕSlag Road gate of the leading steel manufacturer Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur works
on Monday afternoon leading to injuries to two workers. “At around 12.30 pm during slag pooling operations at the hot metal pool-
ing pit near Slag Road gate, a minor explosion occurred
with fire spatters in the near vicinity. Investigation has revealed that the blast
occurred due to pouring of hot slag on the prevailing moisture in the pit. There
was spattering of fire in the vicinity of the blast which was immediately controlled as per established fire control and safety procedures,’
the communique issued by Tata Steel corporate communication unit stated.
According to Tata Steel’s spokesperson, unfortunate the attending foreman andconontractual employee sustained superficial’ burn njuries during the mishap.
“Necessary medical first aid was administered to both the employees and they are back at work,” the spokesperson added.
Sources said that the hot metal logistic foreman who was discharged after first
aid. The company official said that there has been ndamage to any operatinglplant or equipment and nor- mal operations have com-
menced. “We will further investi- gate into the incident todfnsure that such incidents
do not recur going for-ward,” the official added.
Meanwhile, the deafening sound near the Slag Road which is close to the dense-
ly populated Kalimati Road area in the commercial hub of Sakchi led to speculation
of a major blast inside thsteel plant which is
hemmed in by residential areas all around the plant.
Sources, said that the blast took place in the tor-pedo used to shift hot met-
als from blast furnace fromSakchi plant to near the dumping site near Kalimati Road along the Slag Gate after moisture in the torpe-
do. There was not much employees which resulted in few in4juries.The waste materials from the finished steel products are trans-
ferred in the torpedo from Sakchi to the dumping site near Kalimati Road slag
gate after which water is poured to cool the hot metal waste products.
Significantly, on November 2013, at least 11
workers were injured and
two of them seriously fol-
lowing an explosion inside
Tata Steel plant in
Jamshedpur. The explosion
was caused in the LD gas
holder following which a
fire had broken out in the
adjoining gas pipelines.
