MGM Medical College of Jamshedpur will be developed as medical education hub, to offer super specialty courses

Jamshedpur: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College and Hospital is being developed as a major center of medical education in Jharkhand. At the initiative of the state government and the health department, preparations have been accelerated to start MBBS, postgraduate (PG), and super-specialty courses at MGM.

Under this ambitious plan, a proposal is being prepared to open a total of 430 seats, which is expected to provide significant relief to the state’s students in the field of medical education. The state health department has requested a detailed proposal from MGM Medical College management in this regard. The proposal will specify the resources and facilities the college will need to expand seats and introduce new courses.

In this connection, a meeting was held on Friday with all the department heads under the chairmanship of MGM Medical College Principal, Dr. Diwakar Hansda. During the meeting, the principal shared the health department’s plan and directed all department heads to provide detailed reports regarding their respective departments. He stated that the proposal must include all academic, administrative, and technical requirements related to opening 250 MBBS seats, 150 PG seats, and 30 super-specialty seats. After this, the proposal compiled at the college level will be sent to the health department for further approval. Currently, MGM Medical College only offers 100 MBBS and 50 PG seats.

After the implementation of the new proposal, there will be a significant increase in the number of seats, which will increase the academic and clinical capacity of the college manifold. MGM also plans to develop a robust infrastructure to expand seats and introduce super-specialty courses. The proposal will include hiring new faculty members, modern laboratories, additional lecture halls, departmental buildings, hostel expansion, advanced medical equipment, and strengthening the library.

There are also plans to increase the hospital’s bed capacity and develop state-of-the-art treatment facilities. The introduction of super-specialty education at MGM will provide long-term benefits to Jharkhand’s healthcare system. It will also reduce the need to refer patients to other states for treatment of serious and complex illnesses. Local students will also be relieved of the compulsion to travel outside the state for higher medical education.
