Jamshedpur, Oct 15: Great news for medical aspirants in Jharkhand—Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College is set to potentially increase its MBBS seats from 100 to 150. On Tuesday, the National Medical Commission (NMC) held a meeting with College Principal Dr. Divakar Hansda, requesting an undertaking from the Health Department to address minor gaps highlighted during previous inspections. The college administration promptly coordinated with the department and submitted the required undertaking, signaling a positive step toward seat expansion.
Earlier, in August, an NMC team inspected the college’s infrastructure, laboratories and clinical facilities, giving positive feedback while noting minor shortages in faculty and equipment. Dr. Hansda explained, “The NMC only requests such undertakings if the intention to increase seats is genuine. This step reflects a clear indication that the commission is satisfied with our preparedness.”
If approved, the additional 50 MBBS seats will not only benefit students by increasing admission opportunities but also improve healthcare services at MGM Hospital. “More interns and doctors will strengthen patient care in OPDs, emergency services and hospital wards, while specialized departments will benefit from increased research and practical training opportunities,” said Dr. Hansda.
The expansion will particularly benefit students from Jharkhand and neighboring states, reducing the need to seek medical education elsewhere. Affordable, quality education at a government institution like MGM will also support economically weaker students.
Dr. Hansda added, “By increasing seats, we will enhance the academic environment and clinical research activities, improving healthcare infrastructure across the Kolhan division. Over time, more trained doctors will strengthen medical services in both rural and urban areas.”
If the NMC grants approval, MGM will become the second medical college in Jharkhand with 150 MBBS seats, marking a significant milestone in medical education and healthcare services in Jamshedpur and nearby districts.
