Jamshedpur/Kolkata, Feb 7: The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Kolkata Chapter, marked its Diamond Jubilee Year with the successful hosting of the Metals@Green.in Conference 2026, a landmark gathering aimed at accelerating sustainability and green transformation in India’s metallurgical and materials sectors.
Held at the Pride Plaza Hotel, Kolkata, the conference brought together eminent leaders from industry, academia, and government to deliberate on critical challenges and opportunities shaping the future of metallurgy.
Key focus areas included carbon emission reduction, adoption of clean technologies, circular economy practices, waste valorisation, energy efficiency, and sustainable water management.
The inaugural session was graced by a distinguished panel of dignitaries, including Conference Chairman Chaitanya Bhanu, Vice President (Operations), Tata Steel; Chief Guest Rajiv Mangal, Vice President (Safety, Health & Sustainability), Tata Steel; Dr Tanmay Bhattacharyya, Chairman, IIM Kolkata Chapter; Brig Arun Ganguly (Retd), Secretary General, IIM; Prof. Shiv Brat Singh, Professor and Head, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Kharagpur; Guest of Honour Shri Umesh Singh, Executive Director (Mining), Hindustan Copper Limited; and Surajit K Datta.
The speakers underscored the urgent need for innovation-driven strategies to enable a greener and more resilient metals industry.
The conference featured four intensive technical sessions comprising eighteen thought-provoking presentations by experts from leading organizations such as Tata Steel, JSW Steel, JSL (erstwhile JSPL), Hindalco, AM/NS India, IIT Kharagpur, NIT Rourkela, BIS, Penn State University, Jadavpur University, and several international institutions.
Discussions spanned diverse themes including green ironmaking, clean coal technologies, digitalisation, critical minerals, circular materials, e-waste recovery, and water neutrality.
A high-level panel discussion on “Collaborative Pathways to a Green India” highlighted the pivotal role of industry–academia partnerships and emphasized the need for robust policy frameworks to accelerate sustainable iron-making and scrap-based steelmaking technologies.
Guided by a high-powered organizing and advisory committee comprising leaders from major industries and premier academic institutions, the conference concluded with a valedictory session that reaffirmed the collective commitment of stakeholders to steering Indian metallurgy towards a sustainable, low-carbon future.
