Jamshedpur: A 16 year old youth, identified as Alok Kumar Sinha, drowned in Sitarampur dam under RIT police station area on Thursday last.
Sources said the mishap occurred around 11 am when the deceased was bathing in the dam after cleaning and preparing a portion of its banks for Chhath puja.
Alok was accompanied by his six friends. He and his three friends started drowning in the dam. Local villagers rushed to the scene and rescued three of the youths, but failed to save Alok. By the time Alok was taken out, he had expired. He was taken to Tata Main Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
The news of Alokís drowning in the dam sent a wave of grief across Chitraguptanagar locality of Gamharia. Local police informed Pratap Narayan Sinha, father of Alok, about his sonís death.
Police sent the body of the deceased to MGM Medical College for postmortem examination.
Sources said Alok was the youngest of his siblings. He was an ISC student of Karim City College. He was declared second topper of Seraikela-Kharsawan in the Matriculation Board exams of 2015, sources said.
