MCI team carries out surprise inspection of MGM Medical College and Hospital

Jamshedpur: A three member Medical Council of India (MCI) team inspected the MGM Medical College and Hospital at Sakchi and Dimna.

The MCI team inspected MGM hospital at Sakchi to assess the existing infrastructure, staff and faculty strength and the report would be crucial for continuance of undergraduate (read MBBS) courses at the medical college. An adverse report might also see withdrawal of affiliation to the college.

The team inspected different areas and departments. The team was not satisfied with the space utilization in the existing libraries and asked the college to upgrade medical journals and books, said a source.

College principal A N Mishra said that he has apprised the members about shortage of staff and professors in important department like surgery, medicine, orthopaedic, skin and veneral disease and paediatric.

Though the MGM Medical College and Hospital has 520 beds both the medical college as well as the hospital lacks a lot in terms of teaching staff, medical equipments, nursing staff, supportive staff like ward-boy, technicians, dressers and lack of inadequate medicine supply.

While visiting the departments, the MCI team member also checked the attendance register and roster of the doctors and staff nurse as well as the other supportive staff of the hospital.

“I cannot divulge my findings but I am here to conduct the inspection of the medical college hospital, and will submit my report to the MCI shortly,” said the MCI official

AN Mishra, principal of the medical college said that the MCI inspection was also carried out at the medical college by a one-member team, but declined to give details

It may be noted that the medical college had faced a de-affiliation threat in the 2004 inspection due to shortage of faculty members. But , over a period of time, the issue was addressed by the institution’s management and State health department. The hospitalalso set up an out-patients department, facility for CT scan and a blood bank.

It may be mentioned that State Government governed Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital, is an Indian medical school established in 1964.

It is situated on the outskirts of Jamshedpur near Dimna. The students are admitted through an All India pre medical test CBSE PMT held by CBSE and Jharkhand and Bihar states’ combined entrance tests. The college’s hospital is located in Sakchi. Currently there is post graduate education in non clinical and paraclinical subjects.
