Jamshedpur: A historic and emotionally charged celebration was witnessed at Gopal Maidan on the occasion of the 236th birth anniversary of brave martyr Ganga Narayan Singh, where an estimated 55,000 people from Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Assam gathered to pay tribute. The massive turnout transformed the venue into a vibrant display of traditional attire, cultural pride and community unity.

The event showcased a rich cultural panorama, with young girls and artistes performing traditional dances to the rhythmic beats of the Mandar drum, captivating the audience. Various cultural troupes presented folk performances that highlighted the heritage, unity and traditions of the Bhumij community, making the celebration both emotional and culturally significant.

The program began with floral tributes and ceremonial remembrance of Ganga Narayan Singh, followed by addresses from prominent leade6rs and intellectuals who emphasized his legacy of courage and resistance. The organizing committee extended a traditional welcome to all dignitaries and participants.

Call for unity, education and cultural preservation

Addressing the gathering, Potka MLA Sanjib Sardar said that Ganga Narayan Singh’s struggle represented the self-respect and identity of the community. He stated that while attempts were made in the past to suppress their history, the community had now awakened to its roots. He urged the youth to focus on education, remain united and work towards preserving their language and culture. He also emphasized continued collective efforts for cultural preservation.

Jugsalai MLA Mangal Kalindi described Ganga Narayan Singh as a symbol of struggle and dignity, stating that his life remained a guiding force for unity and awareness among youth.

Baharagora MLA Samir Mohanty said such events reconnected society with its cultural roots and helped strengthen awareness among younger generations. Ghatshila MLA Somesh Soren stressed that unity was the greatest strength of society and called for following the ideals of Ganga Narayan Singh to move forward collectively.

Several intellectuals and community leaders were felicitated during the event for their contribution to social and cultural uplift.

The grand event witnessed the presence of several prominent personalities including Jugsalai MLA Mangal Kalindi, Baharagora MLA Samir Mohanty, Ghatshila MLA Somesh Soren, former MLA Menka Sardar, Sideshwar Sardar, Harish Bhumij, Vibhishan Singh Bhumij, Sudarshan Bhumij, Sanjay Sardar (Tata Steel Foundation), Shiv Shankar Singh Kandeyong, Demka Soe, Girish Munda, Mangal Singh Munda, Madan Munda, Dinabandhu Singh, Rampado Singh (West Bengal), Julie Bhumij, Rinki Bhumij (Assam), Radheshyam Bhumij, Harish Chandra Singh Bhumij, Madan Singh Munda, Sanjay Sardar, Ravindra Sardar, Thakur Das Singh, Bihari Lal Sardar, Birguram Sardar, and Hardipado Singh, among many others.

The presence of leaders and representatives from multiple states reflected the deep cultural and emotional connect of the community with Ganga Narayan Singh’s legacy.

Organizers stated that the overwhelming participation of people from multiple states marked one of the largest commemorations of Ganga Narayan Singh’s birth anniversary in recent years, reinforcing his enduring legacy as a symbol of resistance, identity and community pride.
