Jamshedpur, May 18: A massive fire erupted in the Burmamines Mill and Godown area around 5:30 am on Saturday morning, engulfing a wooden tower and causing chaos in the vicinity. The blaze, visible from a considerable distance, posed a daunting challenge to firefighters who battled for nearly 5 hours to extinguish it.
The inferno, which originated in the rubber warehouse of Shri Lakshmi Timber, resulted in losses worth lakhs of rupees, according to the warehouse owner, Om Prakash Jaggi. Prompt response from multiple fire engines was crucial in containing the flames that threatened nearby structures and stored wood.
Notable political figures, including MP Bidyut Baran Mahato from the Bharatiya Janata Party and INDI Alliance candidate Samir Mohanty, along with MLA Mangal Kalindi, visited the site to assess the situation and offer assurances of a thorough investigation.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, speculation arose regarding potential factors such as electricity theft and antisocial activities in the area. Complaints regarding loitering and illicit activities had been previously reported to the police, yet no action had been taken.
Eye-witnesses reported that the fire started near a temple, possibly ignited by burning garbage or rubber packing materials nearby. The intense flames, fueled by rubber waste, posed a significant challenge to firefighters’ efforts.
Despite challenges, the timely arrival of fire vehicles and coordinated efforts prevented further escalation of the blaze. However, concerns were raised about the potential spread of fire to nearby tin sheds, highlighting the urgency of the firefighting operation.
