Jamshedpur: In a major boost to medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Jharkhand, the Central Government has approved a substantial increase in both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) seats at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College and Hospital, Jamshedpur.
According to an official communication from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the institution’s MBBS intake has been raised from 150 to 250 seats—marking an addition of 100 seats. Simultaneously, PG seats have been expanded from 47 to 149 seats, adding 102 seats across various specialized departments.
Multi-Crore Funding for Infrastructure Boost
The seat expansion comes under a Centrally Sponsored Scheme aimed at upgrading existing medical colleges. To accommodate the increase, massive funds running into crores have been sanctioned for infrastructure expansion, new construction, faculty recruitment, and equipment procurement.
- UG Funding: A total of ₹150 crore has been approved for expanding undergraduate infrastructure, with the Central Government contributing a ₹90 crore share.
- PG Funding: A comprehensive plan of ₹223.5 crore has been mapped out for PG seat expansion, featuring a Central share of ₹134.10 crore.
College authorities have been directed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state government and submit it to the Ministry swiftly to initiate work.
Addressing the Shortage of Specialist Doctors
The massive surge in PG seats is being viewed as a long-term solution to the acute shortage of specialist doctors in Jharkhand. More PG seats mean a steady influx of resident doctors specializing in crucial fields such as:
- General Medicine
- Surgery
- Anaesthesia
- Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- Radiology
- Paediatrics
Superintendent Inspects Emergency and Counter Operations
Following the landmark announcement, MGM Hospital Superintendent Dr. Balaram Jha conducted a surprise inspection of the hospital’s emergency ward, medicine department, and other key facilities on Friday.
During the review, Dr. Jha assessed the stock of essential medicines and issued strict directives to the on-duty medical staff. “Under no circumstances should there be a shortage of life-saving drugs in the emergency ward,” he emphasized. He also monitored the hospital’s pharmacy counters, directing officials to ensure minimal wait times for patients and demanding strict punctuality from both doctors and staff.
