Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh declared on Tuesday that authorities will identify and strictly punish those responsible for the “barbaric” killing of two children in Bishnupur district.
The Chief Minister visited a private hospital in Imphal to check on an injured mother who lost her five-year-old son and five-month-old daughter in the blast. Suspected Kuki militants reportedly carried out the attack early Tuesday morning while the family slept.
“An Assault on Humanity”
Chief Minister Singh condemned the strike at Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, Moirang, in the strongest terms. He directed medical officials to provide the highest level of care and full support to the grieving mother.
“This barbaric act is an assault on humanity and a deliberate attempt to disrupt Manipur’s hard-earned peace,” Singh stated on X. “Those responsible will be identified and dealt with strictly as per law. Such acts of terror will not be tolerated.”
The CM suggested that vested interests are attempting to derail the peace process just as the state returns to normalcy. He further suspected that the fresh violence aims to destabilize the two-month-old government, which recently replaced nearly a year of President’s Rule.
Tragedy at 1:00 AM
According to police officials, suspected militants fired a powerful bomb that exploded at a residence in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai village around 1 a.m. The blast:
-
Killed a five-year-old boy and a five-month-old girl instantly.
-
Injured their mother, who remains under medical supervision.
-
Damaged significant portions of the family home.
The village sits near the mountainous Churachandpur district, an area that saw repeated gunfire during the peak ethnic violence of 2023 and 2024.
Escalating Tensions and Security Response
The attack triggered immediate outrage. Angry residents blocked roads and set fire to three trucks carrying goods to Churachandpur, further heightening regional tensions.
In response, senior police officials have deployed a large contingent of security forces to the area. Authorities have launched extensive combing operations to apprehend the perpetrators. Local BJP MLA Shanti Singh also condemned the strike, labeling the incident an act of “terrorism” by “narco-terrorists.”
Chief Minister Singh urged all communities to reject violence and refrain from bandhs or vandalism, warning that such actions only increase the hardships of ordinary citizens.
