Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari Face Off at Kolkata Polling Booth

Bhabanipur (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari arrived simultaneously at the Chakraberia polling booth in Ward No. 73 on Wednesday morning. Despite the sudden face-off at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation site, the two leaders conducted their inspections without interacting.

The Battle for the Bastion

The encounter occurred during the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, where voters are casting ballots for 142 seats across South Bengal. Bhabanipur remains the most high-profile constituency in this phase, representing a direct prestige battle between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The BJP fielded Adhikari as a primary challenger in Banerjee’s traditional stronghold. While Adhikari already contested from Nandigram in the first phase—the seat where he famously defeated Banerjee in 2021—the BJP aims to repeat that success on her home turf.

Historical Stakes

Bhabanipur has served as a TMC bastion since 2011. Although Banerjee lost to Adhikari in Nandigram by 1,956 votes in the 2021 general election, she later secured Bhabanipur in a by-election with a margin exceeding 58,000 votes.

For the TMC, the seat represents the Chief Minister’s local authority and political identity. For Adhikari, a former protégé of Banerjee turned rival, a strong showing here would signal a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
