Jamshedpur: With Makar Sankranti just around the corner, markets across Jamshedpur have come alive with the rich aroma of jaggery and tilkut. Shops selling traditional sweets and festive food items have sprung up across key localities, drawing large crowds of buyers preparing for the harvest festival.
Areas such as Mango, Sakchi, Baridih, Kadma, Jugsalai, Telco, and Govindpur are witnessing brisk business, with stalls stacked with tilkut made from jaggery, sugar, and khoya. Alongside tilkut, shoppers are also picking up black and white sesame laddoos and other seasonal delicacies.
Gaya Artisans Add Authentic Flavour
To meet festive demand, skilled artisans from Gaya district in Bihar have arrived in the city to prepare tilkut using traditional methods. In the Mango market, tilkut production is underway on a large scale ahead of Makar Sankranti. Uday Saw, popularly known as Mukhiya, who has come from Gaya, is overseeing the preparation, assisted by a team of experienced craftsmen.
Festive Foods Dominate Local Markets
The availability of freshly made tilkut and other traditional items has given a festive touch to local bazaars. Shopkeepers say demand rises sharply in the days leading up to Makar Sankranti, as families prefer freshly prepared sweets for rituals and gifting.
