Jamshedpur: A large-scale overhaul of the Mango Drinking Water Project has been planned to ensure the supply of clean and safe drinking water to households across Mango and to make the Baliguma water tank fully operational.
The decision was taken after Saryu Roy carried out an on-site inspection of the project’s intake well on Tuesday. Senior officials of the Mango Municipal Corporation, including the Deputy Municipal Commissioner and engineers, were present during the inspection.
Intake Area Found Polluted
During the visit, the MLA expressed concern over the polluted condition around the river intake point. To prevent further contamination of the water source, it was decided to fence the intake area and strengthen the river embankment surrounding the project.
Capacity Enhancement on the Cards
Roy said the administration would also explore the possibility of repairing and restarting the old 5 MLD (million litres per day) water supply system to boost the overall capacity of the drinking water supply in Mango.
Discussions were also held on installing separate motors for each water tank. At present, only two motors are operational, while the procurement of three additional motors has been proposed. The Mango Municipal Corporation is expected to float a tender for this purpose soon.
Sand Removal and Structural Expansion
Officials noted that a significant quantity of sand has accumulated inside the intake well, restricting water flow. A decision was taken to remove the sand completely and widen the intake structure to ensure smoother and increased inflow of water from the river.
Contractors engaged in the project have been assigned specific responsibilities to ensure that the planned upgrades are executed efficiently and within the stipulated timeframe. Once completed, the revamp is expected to significantly improve drinking water availability and quality for residents of Mango.
