Lynching of youths triggers anguish in Bagbera and Jugsalai

Jamshedpur, May 19: Traffic on the busy Jugsalai-Station road was paralysed for several hours Friday morning as hundreds of residents from Jugsalai and Bagbera took to the streets to protest lynching of four local youths on suspicion of being child-lifters by villagers in Bagbera on Thursday.

The three victims, identified as Vikash Verma, his brother Gautam Verma and their friend Gangesh Gupta were lynched by the Nagadih villagers yesterday night while an elderly lady Ramsati Devi (grandmother of Vikash and Gautam) was grievously injured by the mob after being suspected as child-lifters.

The irate residents put up a road blockade demanding arrest of the culprits involved in the lynching of the youths and compensation for those injured.

Several vehicles were caught up in the jam. Incidentally, the Jugsalai-Station Road also links Bistupur-Kadma-Sonari with industrial units like Tata Pigments and residential areas like Kitadih, Jugsalai, Bagbera, Parsudih and Sundernagar and witnesses over 50,000 vehicles daily.

The irate residents also damaged few bicycles and manhandled contract workers trying to force their way through the blockade for going to their workplaces. They also vandalized the vehicle of DSP law and order who was at the spot to pacify them.

As the news spread the police tried to persuade the protestors but they refused to buzz. The agitators lifted the blockade around 1 pm after the SDO Dhalbhum Manoj Kumar Ranjan reached the spot and assured to give compensation to the victims� kin and arrest the culprits.

�We announced to give a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to each of the three youths killed yesterday night and Rs 50,000 for the injured woman. The police is conducting search operation in the village and all the culprits will be prosecuted for their offence,� said the SDO.

SP City Prashant Anand, DSP City Animesh Nathani, DSP headquarter (I) K N Mishra and DSP traffic Vivekananada Thakur were also present during the negotiations.
