Jamshedpur: Love Affair and depression are the main issues drawing students to commit suicide in Jamshedpur, said Dr Mahabir Ram, Founder of �Jeevan� only registered suicide prevention centre of Bihar-Jharkhand.
Dr Ram talking to the media persons said, the rate of suicide has come down but we have not been successful in decreasing the numbers and its one of the burning issues in Steel city specially the students who account to 15.6% of the total suicide in the Jamshedpur compared to national figures of 5.5 %.
He further informed that female student suicide accounts to 67.5% while male figures come to 32.5% and the pressure of studies that a student goes through is tremendous were there is so much competition to perform better in academics.
Dr JR Jain, Director at �Jeevan� said adults belonging to lower income group are more prone to suicide while students from the upper middle class commit more suicide.
The Bistupur office of the centre had recieved 400 calls from citizens of the city who were some way or the other wanted to commit suicide in 2013 while the figures in 2014 will go up as nearly 400 calls have been received till August 2014.
Schools of the city have been given task to manage stress and for the same the best school will be awarded on Sep 10 at function in SNTI. A rally will be organised by the students of NHES in Bistupur on Wednesday morning.
