JNAC hosts regional workshop of Swachh Survekshan 2020

Jamshedpur: State Urban Development Minister C. P Singh on Tuesday directed urban local bodies (ULBs) to ensure 100 per cent doorstep collection of waste and even asked beneficiaries not to give charges if collection is not done properly.

Addressing a regional workshop of Swachh Survekshan 2020 hosted by Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) the urban local body of Jamshedpur at a hotel in Bistupur, C. P Singh said: We need to adopt cleanliness culture in our life. Just getting certificates and winning awards would not matter much till all the ULBs ensure 100 per cent door to door waste collection. We have received complaints from residents in several cities of civic bodies coming to take user charge though waste collection is not done regularly. I ask residents not to pay user charge if waste collection is not done regularly.

He noted that doorstep collection of household waste would go a long way in minimizing garbage accumulation in residential areas.
The city generates over 400 tonnes of waste daily (comprising both company and non-company command areas). Wastes are generally disposed in the Bara landfill site in Sidhgora and near Jemco. While in Jusco areas organic waste are treated in the compost plant inside Jubilee Park.

Jharkhand finished second in the best performing state in the Swachh Survekshan 2019 behind first position holder Chattisgarh. Jamshedpur (Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee) was the best amongst civic bodies in the state placed 15th in the over-all ranking amongst all the 4237 urban local bodies of the country.

The minister also felt that the objective behind hosting the workshop was to follow the best practices in other ULBs so that ULBs better performance during the Swachh Survekshan 2020.
The local bodies must work to improve their last years performance by replicating the best practices carried out in waste management across the country. We can replicate the best practices done by Jusco (Tata Steel civic utility wing) in Jamshedpur. Waste management should be the priority of the civic bodies, reiterated Singh.
The minister also emphasised on creating more awareness against littering and open defecation and advised ULBs to ensure that toilets constructed are operational.
