Light rain expected in Jamshedpur this weekend: IMD

Jamshedpur: Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Ranchi Meteorological Centre has predicted light rain in isolated areas across Jharkhand this weekend, signaling a shift in the state’s weather patterns.

According to the forecast, a partly cloudy sky accompanied by the possibility of light rain is expected in western and adjoining northern parts of the state on Saturday, December 28. The weather on Sunday, December 29, will feature a partly cloudy sky with a similar possibility of light rain, particularly in the south-western regions.

This change in weather is attributed to a Western Disturbance that currently exists as a cyclonic circulation over Punjab and its neighboring areas, now positioned over Haryana at an altitude of 3.1 km above mean sea level. Additionally, an induced cyclonic circulation persists over northwest Madhya Pradesh and its surrounding regions at 1.5 km above mean sea level. These meteorological developments are responsible for the altered weather conditions in Jharkhand.

In tandem with the cloudy weather forecast, the state has also seen a noticeable rise in minimum temperatures over the past 24 hours. Ranchi, the state capital, recorded a minimum temperature of 12.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, while Jamshedpur’s minimum temperature stood at 16.6 degrees Celsius. Daltonganj recorded 13.8 degrees Celsius, and Bokaro’s minimum temperature was 13.5 degrees Celsius.

The IMD noted that the minimum temperatures across almost all districts of Jharkhand were 3-4 degrees Celsius higher than the normal range for this time of the year. The warming trend, coupled with light rain and cloud cover, points to an unusual weather pattern for December, typically a cooler and drier month in the region.

Residents in affected areas have been advised to prepare for light rain and possible disruptions in outdoor activities over the weekend. Farmers are particularly encouraged to monitor the weather closely as unexpected rain can impact winter crops. Meanwhile, the rising temperatures are being viewed with curiosity by meteorologists, who are keeping a watchful eye on further developments in the region’s atmospheric conditions.

“ This forecast underscores the dynamic nature of Jharkhand’s weather as the state transitions through the winter season, with broader implications for agriculture, daily life, and travel plans,” said an official.
