Left leaders demand relief for forest dwellers

Jamshedpur: A delegation of Communist Party of India (Marxist) handed over a memorandum to the deputy commissioner of East Singhbhum Dr Amitabh Kaushal and demanded measures to stop alleged attempts to remove local forest dwellers allegedly being made by forest department. They also demanded that the cases lodged against the forest dwellers should be revoked.

The party leaders alleged that the forest department should be asked not to interfere with the life of forest dwellers who have been occupying the forest areas since a long time. The department should also withdraw all cases lodged against the tribal people living in the forest, they said.

It is both shocking as well as dismaying to see that the tribal people having occupation right on the forest land are being threatened and booked at the behest of the Central government. This is not becoming of a responsible government since it is taking away the rights of the tribal people who have been given special rights by the government on account of their long association with forest, said a party leader.
