Jamshedpur: The annual Tusu Mela at Gopal Maidan witnessed leaders emphasizing the need for tribal unity, organized by Jharkhandvasi Ekta Manch. With a footfall exceeding a thousand people this year, the late Sunil Mahto, former Jamshedpur MP, initiated the mela to champion tribal culture.

Showcasing tribal artistry from Jharkhand, Odisha, and Bengal, the event featured towering Tusu idols and elaborate choudals made of hay and bamboo sticks. The two main choudals, standing at 70ft and 80ft, added grandeur to the festivities.

‘Tusu,’ akin to harvest celebrations in other regions, symbolizes the goddess ‘Tusu Devi’ through cardboard creations adorned with colorful paper and female dolls. Crafted by unmarried teenage girls, these idols, some towering at ten feet, become a focal point of admiration in the villages.

Groups from various locales brought vibrant performances to the Tusu Mela, such as 40 Chhau dancers, over 30 drummers, and other talented individuals. A notable attraction was a colossal traditional drum requiring six participants for a mesmerizing performance.

Sudhir Mahto, a member of a participating group from Chandil, highlighted the tradition of rural artistes visiting different Tusu melas to partake in competitions, showcasing their best idols and decorated choudals. The event served as a vibrant convergence of culture, community, and celebration.
