New Delhi (IANS): After a quiet 2025 season spent on the sidelines, Kumar Kushagra is ready to explode onto the IPL stage. Instead of fading into the background, the Jamshedpur youngster used his time at the Gujarat Titans (GT) to overhaul his game. Now, he returns to the squad as a versatile powerhouse ready for “heavy lifting.”
The results of his hard work are already visible. Kushagra anchored Jharkhand’s historic Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy win, amassing 422 runs at an incredible average of 60.28.
Refining the Craft: The Solanki Effect

Kushagra credits GT Director of Cricket Vikram Solanki for transforming his batting mindset. Previously a lower-order finisher, Kushagra struggled against the new ball simply due to a lack of exposure.
-
The Shift: Solanki pushed Kushagra to open or bat at number three during practice.
-
The Strategy: “He told me to stop thinking about the old ball,” Kushagra recalled. “I learned to use the power-play, find gaps, and stop trying to hit over every fielder.”
-
The Result: Kushagra successfully transitioned to the number three spot for Jharkhand, providing the aggression the team needed to clinch the trophy.
Masterclass Behind the Stumps
Kushagra didn’t just focus on his willow; he went to “finishing school” for wicketkeeping under two legends:
| Mentor | Focus Area | Key Lesson |
| Parthiv Patel | Spin Specialist | Mastering the glovework for Rashid Khan’s unpredictable deliveries. |
| Matthew Wade | Pace Specialist | Positioning and agility against high-velocity fast bowling. |
“Parthiv sir taught me how to move against Rashid Khan. He’s unpredictable. Wade sir focused on the fast bowlers. I feel I’ve ticked both boxes now,” Kushagra explained.
Learning from “Captain Cool” Ashish Nehra
Beyond technical skills, Kushagra absorbed the unique culture fostered by Head Coach Ashish Nehra. He noted how Nehra balances a lighthearted personality outside the boundary with intense focus inside the ropes. This environment helped Kushagra mature, leading him to captain Jharkhand in the absence of Ishan Kishan.
The Road Ahead: From GT to Team India
While Jos Buttler remains GT’s primary keeper-batter, Kushagra is no longer just a backup. His goal is clear:
-
Win the IPL 2026 title with Gujarat Titans.
-
Earn a maiden call-up to the Indian National Team.
By applying the “quiet work” from the 2025 nets to the high-pressure domestic season, Kushagra has proven he belongs in the spotlight.
