Jamshedpur: Most of the students seeking admissions in under graduate courses in city-based colleges are giving preference to vocational courses rather than the conventional subjects.
Call them undergraduate courses with a difference. The popularity of vocational studies offered by Kolhan University is increasing every year.
Courses offered by Jamshedpur Women�s College like MBA (two year full time programme), Communicative English( one year) Graduation in Biotechnology ( three year) are much sought after by a sizeable chunk of students who want to hone their soft skills in different areas.
�In the last few years the courses we offered have become very popular. The courses are market-oriented and this also appeals to many applicants� said an official.
Jamshedpur Women�s College offers about 11 vocational courses ranging including BSC (IT), BCA, and several add one course like Banking, Web Designing, etc. The best part of these courses is that students get Bachelor�s degree after completion.
According to officials of Jamshedpur Workers� College, students are opting for job-oriented courses, which could land them plum jobs. �Since corporate sector is more lucrative than most conventional job providers, MBA has become the most sought-after course,� he said.
He said that the Worker�s College has added two-year course of MBA in its curriculum. The craze for MBA has increased manifold over the years and this year a sizable number of students had applied for the course.
Karim City College, another city-based premier college, has number of professional courses in store like Mass Communication and Video Production, Informational Technology, Computer Application etc.
�Yes we are receiving number of queries from students who are keen to take admissions in vocation courses. There is a common perception among students that conventional courses cannot land them a job immediately. This has also led to a rush in the vocational field,� said a professor.
Expressing similar opinions Minakshi Das, a student of Jamshedpur Women�s College, said, �These are the times when wrong planning can spoil your career. We should know the details and the scope of the course we plan to join. I am of the opinion that traditional courses like BA and MA do not help in getting jobs while professional and technical courses provide a lot of avenues�.
