Chaibasa: Students and teachers of the Kolhan University, Chaibasa, observed Indian Languages Day at the PG Department auditorium to commemorate the birth anniversary of renowned poet, thinker, social reformer, and freedom fighter Subramania Bharati. The programme highlighted the importance of Indian languages and Bharati’s contribution to literature and social reform.
The event was presided over by Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Tapan Kumar Khanrah, while Hindi Department faculty member of Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribagh, Mithilesh Kumar Singh was present as the chief guest. The programme began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and floral tribute to the portrait of Subramania Bharati.
Khanrah spoke about the multifaceted personality of Subramania Bharati, describing him as a visionary poet, thinker, social reformer, and committed nationalist. He said language is not merely a tool of communication but a strong foundation of India’s cultural, social, and political identity.
Head of the Hindi Department, Piyush Kumar, said that the need to preserve and promote local and regional languages and highlighted Bharati’s lifelong struggle for a society based on equality, particularly in terms of caste and gender.
In his keynote address, chief guest Mithilesh Kumar Singh spoke at length about Subramania Bharati’s literary contributions and the richness, diversity, and significance of Indian languages. He also drew attention to the global concern over endangered languages and stressed the need for collective efforts to protect linguistic heritage.
Heads of various postgraduate departments, faculty members, research scholars, students, and other members of the university community attended the programme.
