Kolhan University to focus on improving infrastructure

Jamshedpur : The vice-chancellor of newly formed Kolhan University, R.P.P. Singh , has expressed an urgent need for restructuring of colleges under the varsity to improve standards of education in the region.

The vice chancellor recently inspected several colleges and said that there was an urgent need to improve infrastructure and normalise academic session so that students are not forced to leave for metro cities for higher studies.

I feel the colleges should be capable of generating maintenance cost. We have to work together to ensure placement facilities. For this we have to build up links with corporate houses. It is really sad that colleges have failed to build on the linkage till now, he noted.

Installing CCTVs in colleges with a centralized monitoring system from the Kolhan University office in Chaibasa may ensure regular classes in constituent and affiliated colleges . The purpose of his surprise visit was to see the functioning of colleges, the attendance and teaching.

He has asked the colleges to maintain a register to record time of the classes. So, the teacher needs to mention the time when she enters class and also when she gets out. This would make it easy even for the principal to know the duration of the classes.

Singh while talking to the college staff at the Jamshedpur Workers College in Mango shared that he has a plan of installing CCTVs in all college classrooms while the monitors will be in Chaibasa making it easier for the VC to keep an eye on classes. However, due to a high budget, it might take time to implement the project.

The VC accepted the fact that the dearth of teachers are a problem in colleges and that he is trying to make a plan where retired teachers and NET qualified students can also be given the task of teaching. Till last year, post graduate toppers were allowed to teach in the concerned colleges.

On his visit, he also said that he will soon call a meeting with his university staff and the principals of all colleges who will be asked to come with their problems and ideas to improve the standard of education and infrastructure

On the other hand the vice-chancellor also said that the process to finally make university functioning make take some time but his priority would be to hire officials on an ad hoc basis.

It may be noted that the university has been carved out of Ranchi University with 15 colleges under its jurisdiction. Colleges
Principals and educationalists in city have expressed happiness over the inspection by VC and expressed hopes that the scenario of higher education in the rural belt would improve with establishment of new university
