Ranchi: Police arrested Dawood Hembram alias Vimal Hembram in connection with the killing of former Pakur SP Amarjeet Balihar from Amrapara police station area of Pakur late yesterday night.
Police confiscated a self loading rifle (SLR) and five cartridges from Bishunpur hill where Hembram was hiding with his aides.
Hembram fell into police dragnet on the basis of a tip-off. Cops had got information that Hembram was present in Bargo hill area. He was caught with a pistol and bullets.
The DGP of Jharkhand Rajeev Kumar said cops had also seized two mobile phones including one mobile phone of a police jawan Rajeev Sharma who was killed in the encounter with Naxalites along with Amarjeet Balihar.
The police chief said Hembram used to issue threats to people on the numbers saved in the mobile phone of martyred cop Rajeev Sharma. Cops succeeded in arresting Hembram on the basis of the mobile phone location of the looted mobile phone.
Police said the accused Naxalite had confessed to his involvement in the attack on police party and the subsequent killing of former Pakur SP Amarjeet Balihar.
Hembram also confessed to his involvement in the attack on police and election duty staff in Shikaripara on 24th April last during Lok Sabha election in Dumka Lok Sabha constituency.
Hembram told interrogators the former Pakur SP was killed by the squad led by Maoist leader Pravir. Balihar had led police to kill a member of the squad in an operation. He was killed in revenge by the Naxalites, Hembram told police.
Five police personnel including the former Pakur SP were killed by Naxalites in Littipara police station area of Pakur on 10th April last year. Arms were looed by the fleeing Naxalites.
