Jamshedpur: The water level in Kharkai river reached 129 metre following the opening of the Byangbil dam in Odisha. Swarnarekha river also swelled after release of water from the dam. The sluice gates of the dam were opened half a metre on Sunday. On Monday, the gates were closed around 9 am.
After closure of the dam, the water level in Kharkai went a meter below the danger level. Around 4 pm, the water level was below 129 metre while the Swarnarekha was flowing below the level of 119 metre.
Sources said the Byangbil dam was opened after heavy rains in Odisha over the last few weeks.
