Jamshedpur: In a decisive police action late Thursday night, three key accused in the high-profile kidnapping case of businessman’s son Kairav Gandhi were shot and injured during a dramatic encounter in the Bistupur police station area. The exchange of fire took place near a drain on the road leading to the Sai Temple, where police had taken the accused for recovery of weapons used in the crime.
Police officials said the accused—identified as Ramesh Raja, Guddu Singh and Mohammad Imran—were recently arrested from Nalanda district in Bihar and were being questioned in connection with the kidnapping. During interrogation, they disclosed that the firearms used in the abduction had been hidden near the Sai Temple area. Acting swiftly on this information, a special team of Bistupur police brought the accused to the spot late at night.
Recovery Operation Turns Violent
According to the police, the situation took a sudden and dangerous turn during the recovery operation when the accused attempted to overpower the police team. In a shocking act, one of the criminals allegedly snatched a carbine rifle from a police officer and opened indiscriminate fire, firing around six rounds at the police personnel.
The unexpected attack created chaos at the scene and posed a serious threat to the lives of the policemen. Exercising restraint and acting strictly in self-defence, the police retaliated. During the exchange of fire, all three accused sustained bullet injuries to their legs and fell to the ground, effectively neutralising the threat.
Accused Shifted to Hospital, Condition Serious
Immediately after the encounter, the injured accused were rushed to Tata Main Hospital (TMH) and MGM Hospital under tight security. Hospital sources confirmed that all three are undergoing treatment under close medical supervision and their condition remains serious. Notably, no police personnel were injured during the encounter.
Firearms and Incriminating Materials Seized
Police recovered two pistols, ammunition, and other incriminating materials from the encounter site. The seized weapons have been sent for forensic examination to determine their use in previous criminal activities. Police teams are continuing raids to track down other members of the gang and uncover the wider criminal network behind the kidnapping.
Top Officers Rush to Spot
Following the incident, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Piyush Pandey and City SP Kumar Shivashish, along with other senior officers, reached the encounter site and later visited the hospital. The officers inspected the scene, reviewed the sequence of events, and gathered detailed reports from the police team involved. Senior officials commended the courage, alertness, and professionalism displayed by the policemen during the high-risk operation.
Major Breakthrough in Kidnapping Probe
Police described the encounter as a crucial breakthrough in the investigation of the sensational kidnapping of Kairav Gandhi, which had caused widespread concern across the city. Officials believe that the arrested accused are key operatives of the gang and possess vital information that could help dismantle the entire kidnapping network.
Further interrogation is expected to reveal additional links and expose the masterminds behind the crime. The police have reaffirmed their resolve to take stringent action against organised criminal gangs and ensure law and order in Jamshedpur.
