Justice M.S. Sonak to become new Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court

Ranchi, Dec. 18: Justice M.S. Sonak has been recommended as the next Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court by the Supreme Court Collegium.

According to legal sources , the recommendation was made at the Collegium meeting held today.

His appointment will take effect after the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan on January 8 next year ( 2026 ).

Currently serving as a judge of the Bombay High Court, Justice Sonak is among several senior judges proposed for elevation as Chief Justices in various High Courts across the country.

In other recommendations, Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta of the Allahabad High Court has been named Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court, following the retirement of the current Chief Justice on January 9, 2026.

Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo of the Odisha High Court has been recommended for appointment as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, confirmed highly placed legal sources.

Significantly, the recommendations are subject to formal approval and issuance of appointment notifications by the President of India.
