Journalists are the voice of society: Nandini Shukla

International Journalist Day celebrated at KSMS

Jamshedpur, Nov 19: Kerala Samajam Model School (KSMS) celebrated International Journalist Day with an interactive and insightful programme aimed at introducing students to the role, responsibilities and changing landscape of journalism.

In her address, Principal Nandini Shukla emphasized the importance of the profession, saying, “Journalists are the voice of society, and their work is crucial to strengthening democracy. They must continue to ask questions and seek truth.” She encouraged students to understand journalism as a powerful tool that shaped public discourse.

A special panel discussion was organised on the topic “The Thrill, Challenges, and Zeal in the Pursuit of Truth: Exploring the Scope of Modern Journalism.” Senior journalists Sandeep Savran, Shashi Bhushan, Manpreet Bhatia and Anuj Kumar participated as panelists, sharing their insights and experiences from the field.

Speaking during the discussion, Sandeep Savran said that in the age of social media, anyone with a smartphone considers himself a journalist, but true journalism requires verification. “Information spreads fast, but good journalists always double-check before sharing,” he said.

Manpreet Bhatia highlighted that journalism was a mission, not just a profession. “Journalism is not only about delivering news; it is about delivering truth. It is the voice of the people,” he said. He also cautioned students about fake news and cited a recent example where a leading Hindi news channel falsely reported the death of a Bollywood legend, leading even the Defence Minister to post an unverified condolence message. “Students must remain alert and avoid falling prey to misinformation,” he added.

During the event, students showcased news bulletins they had prepared and also presented musical performances.

KSMS President K. Muralidharan, Registrar Vrinda Suresh, sports journalist Nesar Ahmed, Ranjan Jha, Uttam Gupta and others were present on the occasion.
