Jamshedpur, June 5 : From civic body Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) celebrated World Environment Day based on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.
Students, senior citizens took out a rally carrying cloth bags and raised slogans to promote the use of cloth and jute bags replacing polythene bags. The rally started from Motilal Nehru Public School in Sakchi and ended at the JNAC office also in Sakchi. A sit and draw competition for students was also organised at Motilal Nehru Public School.
JNAC that concluded its four day 6R conclave (reduce, recycle, reuse, refuse, rethink and redesign) at its office also released a short film on 6R.
�We have released a short film that will be circulated among people and will be uploaded on social media so that people know more about the concept of 6Rs,” said Sanjay Pandey, special officer, JNAC. Winners of selfie competition on the theme ‘selfie with cloth bag ‘ was also distributed today.
JNAC invited the citizens to take selfie with cloth bags while shopping. They shared their picture on helpline number (7635094335). After a lucky draw, the top five winners were felicitated.
As the city gears up to celebrated World Environment Day, the civic body, Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee ( JNAC) is taking several to spread awareness on the ill effects of plastic on environment.
JNAC has come up with reverse vending machine doles out discount coupons when someone drops used bottles and cans into it. The civic body is also inviting the citizens to take selfie with cloth bags while shopping.
Meanwhile, city is all set to observe World Environment Day by organising a string of activities to celebrate the occasion across its locations and divisions to spread awareness about environment protection, sustenance and eco-conscious growth.
Activities like sapling plantation, besides generating awareness on environmental sustainability through various programmes will mark the observance of the World Environment Day.
A social workers said that with �Beat Plastic Pollution� as the theme for this year�s edition, the city is coming together to combat single-use plastic pollution. �Every year the world uses 500 billion plastic bags. Moreover, each year, at least 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the oceans, the equivalent of a full garbage truck every minute.
In the last decade, we produced more plastic than in the whole last century 50 percent of the plastic we use is single-use or disposable. We buy one million plastic bottles every minute Plastic makes up 10 per cent of all of the waste we generate. Steps should be taken to stop the menace.
