Jamshedpur: The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has launched a stringent drive to recover outstanding rents from shopkeepers in the city’s Sairat bazars. Over 200 shopkeepers in Sakchi, Bistupur, and other areas have been given a week to clear their dues or face shop closures. This action targets nearly 7,500 shops spread across 52.73 acres of government land in 10 Sairat bazar, which were initially managed by Tata Steel before being handed over to JNAC.

According to a JNAC official, “More than 200 shopkeepers with substantial dues have been issued a final warning. If the dues are not cleared within the stipulated time, sealing actions will follow.” The crackdown is particularly focused on Sakchi and Bistupur markets, where some shopkeepers owe large sums. For example, Mohammad Rafiq and Rambalak from Sakchi each owe over Rs 17,000 under old rental rates. Revised rates would increase the outstanding amounts significantly.

These unpaid rents have caused significant revenue losses for JNAC, prompting this recovery campaign. Sairat bazar, vital hubs for Jamshedpur’s economy, provide employment to numerous small business owners. Discontent among shopkeepers has grown in recent years following steep rent hikes, further contributing to the delays in payments.

The ultimatum extends beyond Sakchi and Bistupur to other markets such as Kadma, Sonari Aerodrome Market, Kagalnagar, Baridih, Golmuri, and Sidgora. The JNAC emphasized that this drive is essential to maintaining the markets and ensuring steady revenue.

“Sairat bazar is the economic backbone of Jamshedpur, and timely rent payments are crucial for its sustainability,” the official added. Shopkeepers are urged to settle their dues immediately to avoid disruptions, as the JNAC prepares to take decisive action against defaulters unwilling to comply.
