JNAC chalks strategy to clean drains before June 15

Jamshedpur : Following the instructions by East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Amitabh Kaushal, local urban body (JNAC) today prepared strategy to clear drains before June 15.

The urban body will be outsourcing the cleaning of big drains (depth of more than four feet) to private parties to overcome its manpower shortage while smaller drains will be cleaned regularly by its own staff on a roster basis.

The city has nearly 40 big drains out of which 15 drains have effluents of companies passing through it. There are nearly 150 small drains in different localities of the city.

Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) special officer Dipak Sahay said that the tenders for cleaning of nearly 14 big drains are completed. Tata Steel subsidiary Jusco have also been asked for cleaning the big drains before monsoon. If the drains are not cleaned within the time period the matter would be brought to the notice of the deputy commissioner for action.

The East Singhbhum administration has also decided to open up a control room that will coordinate with different agencies working to check the effects of incessant rains. � We are taking preventive measures as this time we are not going to take any chances but steps are being taken to prepare an action plan to combat flood situation.

All the notified area committees will supervise the operations in their jurisdictions while the control room will keep in touch with them,� said a district official.The JNAC is entrusted with upkeep of the civic amenities in urban slums outside Tata Steel command area for a populace of over 5 lakhs. JNAC has 70 cleaning staff and take on ad-hoc basis further 20 to step up the cleaning of small drains.

The special officer has been asked to make strategy to clean drains and lift up garbage in the areas. During the rainy season the roads turned into that makes their life hell. The rain water enters in this trough formed due to lack of repairs and caused problems for the commuters.

Many two-wheelers had met with an accident in the area, especially at night, for not being able to anticipate the problem. The clogged drains in the said localities which were identified for cleaning several weeks ago are proving to be safe breeding ground for the mosquitoes.

The district administration had also mulled launching special awareness campaign through pamphlets among the locals explaining them about the symptoms of the vector borne diseases and steps to prevent it but there’s no such campaign visible in the district, thus far.
