Ranchi, May 2: Anjani Soren, sister of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and daughter of JMM founder Shibu Soren, has been officially nominated as a candidate for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). This announcement marked her second consecutive candidacy from the Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha constituency in Odisha.
Anjani Soren will face off against BJP’s Naba Charan Majhi and BJD’s Sudam Marandi, who previously led JMM in Odisha. The contest gains significance with the BJP replacing sitting MP and Union Minister Vishweshwar Tudu with Naba Charan Majhi.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Anjani Soren secured 1,35,552 votes, clinching the third position. BJP’s Bisheshwar Tudu emerged victorious with 42.1 percent of the votes. Notably, Congress refrained from fielding a candidate in the Mayurbhanj constituency.
Amidst political shifts, Hemant Soren’s incarceration since January 31 on charges of a land scam had prompted familial political movements. His sister-in-law Sita Soren defected to BJP and is contesting from the Dumka Lok Sabha seat, while his wife Kalpana Soren has entered politics with a JMM ticket for the Gandey Assembly by-election. Speculations regarding Kalpana’s potential ascension to the CM post were quashed with Champai Soren assuming the role of Chief Minister.
