Ranchi, March 5: The ruling JMM has asserted a strong claim over both Rajya Sabha seats from Jharkhand that are set to fall vacant ahead of the elections scheduled in May–June.
One seat has already fallen vacant following the demise of “Dishom Guru” Shibu Soren, while the second will become vacant in June with the completion of BJP leader Deepak Prakash’s term.
The Election Commission is expected to initiate the process for filling these two seats in the coming months.
With the ruling alliance enjoying a comfortable majority in the state Assembly, JMM has formally laid claim to both seats.
However, indications suggest that the Congress, an ally in the coalition government, is also staking its claim to one of the two berths, setting the stage for internal negotiations within the alliance.
The upcoming Rajya Sabha polls are likely to test the dynamics of the ruling coalition as parties weigh their political leverage ahead of the crucial nominations.
