Jamshedpur, Nov 14: The Ghatshila Assembly constituency has long been a stronghold of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), with the party registering repeated victories over the decades.
Although, the Congress once enjoyed considerable influence here, and the BJP managed to secure the seat only once, Ghatshila’s political landscape has largely been shaped by regional forces.
Ghatshila, which was originally part of the Baharagora Assembly segment, became an independent constituency in 1957.
In that first election, Shishir Kumar Mahato of the Jharkhand Party emerged victorious.
The seat then saw a series of diverse political winners — CPI’s Basta Soren in 1962, Congress’s D. Murmu in 1967, and Independent candidate Yadunath Baske in the 1969 by-election.
From 1972 to 1980, the CPI made a strong mark as Tikaram Manjhi clinched three consecutive victories.
The Congress returned to power in 1985 through Karan Chandra Mardi, while Independent candidate Surya Singh Besra won the 1990 election.
Congress leader Pradeep Kumar Balmuchu dominated the next three terms, winning in 1995, 2000 and 2005.
The political tides shifted in 2009 when JMM’s Ramdas Soren defeated Balmuchu, becoming MLA for the first time.
In 2014, the BJP scripted history with its first and only victory in Ghatshila, as Laxman Tudu captured the seat.
However, the constituency soon returned to JMM’s fold — Ramdas Soren reclaimed the seat in both 2019 and 2024.
He was appointed a minister in the state cabinet, but his untimely death led to a by-election.
In the subsequent bypoll, Ramdas Soren’s son, Somesh Soren, carried forward his father’s legacy with a decisive win, once again reaffirming JMM’s dominance.
Ghatshila’s electoral history clearly underscores the consistent trust its voters have placed in JMM, with the party emerging as the preferred political force for the region across generations.
