JMM keeps presidential nominee card close to chest

Hemant meets Amit Shah, Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi 

Ranchi, June 27: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi today.

This meeting of the Chief Minister with the Union Home Minister and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha has been described as a courtesy call in the official release issued by chief minister’s secretariat.

Hemant Soren said to scribes after the meeting that “When time comes everything would be clear,”.

JMM sources say that there are many such issues related to Jharkhand, which have been conveyed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. At the same time, the latest political situation was discussed with the senior Congress leader.

The side of JMM was also discussed during the presidential election.

It is likely that JMM’s side during the Presidential election was also discussed during the meeting with Amit Shah and Mallikarjun Kharge.

Regarding the CM’s visit to Delhi, it is also being told that on June 28, Hemant Soren’s side is to be presented in the Election Commission in the Office of Profit case.

Significantly, JMM legislative party meeting attended by all party MLAs and MPs along with Shibu Soren at Ranchi on Saturday had decided to send the chief minister to meet Amit Shah with state’s grievances before taking a decision on extending support to Droupadi Murmu.

The development comes in the backdrop of NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu calling up Soren to seek JMM’s support in the July 18 polls.

A senior JMM leader, on condition of anonymity, said it will be difficult for JMM to ignore Murmu as she shares a “personal connection” with the Soren family and is a prominent tribal leader. BJD has already declared its support for the NDA candidate.

Murmu has been twice (2000 and 2009) elected from the Rairangpur seat in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on BJP tickets. In 2015, she was sworn in as the first woman governor of Jharkhand.

For the presidential election, she filed her nomination papers on Friday in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of union ministers, MPs and chief ministers.

The opposition of which JMM is also part has named former union minister Yashwant Sinha as its joint candidate for the presidential election scheduled on July 18.

Hemant Soren is learnt to have raised the issue of the Sarna dharma code in the Census with the Union home minister and also pending dues of Rs 1.36 lakh Crore with Coal PSU of Jharkhand.

Hemant Soren is also learnt to have apprised the senior Congress leader about political compulsion of JMM with the announcement of Droupadi Murmu as President’s nominee by NDA.
