Jamshedpur, July 18: In an announcement made by the Special Olympics Bharat, 8 athletes and 4 coaches have been shortlisted from Jharkhand to represent India in the Summer Olympics scheduled to be held in the USA later this month.
Tata Steel has sponsored Special Olympics Bharat for the World Summer Games 2015 to be held from 25th July to 2nd August 2015 in Los Angeles, California, USA. In a send-off ceremony organised today at JRD sports complex, Sunil Bhaskaran, VP, Corporate Services, Tata Steel interacted and encouraged the contingent from the state of Jharkhand including eight athletes & four coaches who have been selected to represent India in these games.
Addressing the athletes, Sunil Bhaskaran said that you must enjoy the Hollywood city which is condered one of the best in the World and make new friends.
The 2015 Special Olympics World Summer games will feature world-class competitions in aquatics, gymnastics, track and field, basketball, football (soccer)�cycling, golf and many other summer sports. First lady Michelle Obama will attend the opening ceremony of the 2015 Special Olympics World Games on July 25.
The grand event will feature world-class competitions in aquatics, gymnastics, track & field, basketball, football (soccer), cycling, golf and several other sports. The games are to stage nearly 7000 athletes, 3000 coaches from 177 different countries.
The US are expecteing more than 5,00,000 spectators� attendance at the World Games from July 25 to August 2. US First Lady Michelle Obama is to embark the event on July 25.
Special Olympics Bharat is sending its second largest contingent with 242 athletes, 62 coaches, 6 head of delegations and 24 officials & assistant staffs. Indian athletes will participate in 14 events.
Team Jharkhand is the largest contingent ever from the state. The athletes selected are Gurbir Kaur (Badminton), Mamu Rashid (Athletics), Anurag Chakrabarty (Basketball), Tejender Singh (Basketball), Md. Sajid(Football), Md. Abdul Saquib(Softball) and Md. Shaban(Softball).
Seema Nag(Badminton), Rajesh Prasad(Basketball), O.S.Ashok Kumar(Football) and Satbir Singh Sahota(Cycling) the 4 selected coaches. The participants have attended the three National Coaching Camps at Hyderabad, Rohtak and Chennai conducted earlier.
They are also undergoing rigorous training at the sports complex which has started from June 15. The team will proceed to Kolkata on July 19 and leave for Los Angeles on the Cathy Pacific Flight via Hong Kong. They are to return back on August 6.
Special athletes of Jharkhand has won 9 gold, 14 silver and 9 bronze medals so far in the earlier World Summer & Winter Games.
