International Zinc Association organizes webinar
Jamshedpur, June 15: International Zinc Association recently organized a webinar on ‘Understand BIS compliance & measurement techniques’ to discuss the sustainable development of the infrastructure sector and bring in the relevance of meeting quality checks of steel components.
ACR Das, Ex-Industrial Advisor, Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India, said, “Products like galvanised and/or colour coated sheets, which are covered under the Mandatory Certification Marks Scheme of BIS as per the Quality Control Order issued by Ministry of Steel, must conform to the Indian Standard IS: 277, and also must bear the ISI Mark on it. Products must meet the specified minimum zinc coating weight, bend test requirements, specified size requirements, and must be free from visible surface defects. Buyers can also insist for test certificate from suppliers. For common buyers, most important thing to check the quality of the coated and painted roofing sheets is to ensure that the sheets bear the ISI Mark on it. Organised buyers can also get the coating weights tested by any recognised Laboratory.”
Dr. Paswan Sharma, Principal Scientist, National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur said, “The manufacturing sector across the country was badly hit by Covid 19 last year due to lock down. However, this year, all the steel producers in India including those in Jharkhand are expected to come out with better results. The National Steel Policy, 2017 has set an ambitious target of enhancing India’s steel capacity to 300 MT by 2030. The Government has also launched the “Purvodaya” Scheme for accelerated development of the Eastern Region through an integrated Steel Hub. I am hopeful that in years to come, Jharkhand particularly, the Bokaro region is going to play its dominant role in making Purvodaya scheme a success.”
Dr. Rahul Sharma, Director – India, International Zinc Association said, “IZA understands the importance of construction and infrastructure sector in the growth of economy. Infrastructure that became the identity of modern India with the Zinc coated steel products, life of any structural steel can be increased and in turn it will reduce GDP losses and help in eradication of Corrosion. All the domestic steel manufacturers understand the importance of Galvanised steel and they are promoting its usage and creating awareness. I think domestic steel manufacturers are contributing towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat Mission in a big way.”
The session highlighted the application of steel in new building material technologies, technical specifics of Steel coating that retailers and end-consumers should be mindful of while purchasing steel components and how galvanized and coated steel can help sustain the life of structures by preventing surface corrosion.
International zinc Association (IZA) which operates internationally and locally through its regional affiliates helps sustain the long-term global demand for zinc and its markets by promoting such key end uses as corrosion protection for steel and the essentiality of zinc in human health and crop nutrition.
