Jamshedpur: The state of Jharkhand is beginning to feel the early influence of the southwest monsoon, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting light rainfall and thundershowers in isolated regions over the next two days. The gentle onset of the monsoon is being welcomed by residents, especially after the prolonged heat spell that gripped the region through May.
According to the latest IMD bulletin issued on June 4, light rain is expected on both June 4 and June 5. However, the forecast indicates that the rain activity on June 5 may largely bypass the southwestern districts of the state, keeping those regions dry for now.
Meteorological experts attribute this changing weather pattern to evolving synoptic conditions, which are showing encouraging signs of monsoon advancement. A key atmospheric feature influencing Jharkhand’s current weather is the formation of an upper air cyclonic circulation over East Bihar, situated at approximately 0.9 km above mean sea level. This system is expected to increase moisture levels and trigger localized rainfall in the adjoining areas, including parts of Jharkhand.
As of June 4, the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) has made significant progress across the Indian subcontinent. The line now stretches through a vast corridor beginning from the Arabian Sea and reaching into eastern and northeastern India. The updated NLM trajectory includes 17.0°N/55°E, 17.5°N/60°E, 18°N/65°E, 18.5°N/70°E, Mumbai, Ahilyanagar, Adilabad, Bhawanipatna, Puri, Sandhead Island, 23.5°N/89.5°E, Balurghat, and extends up to 30°N/85°E near the eastern Nepal border.
This progression underscores the monsoon’s advancing grip over the Indian landmass, having already reached key regions such as Mumbai, parts of Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal, and extending toward the eastern Himalayan foothills.
The upper air cyclonic circulation over East Bihar is of particular interest to meteorologists. While such circulations are common during the early monsoon phase, this one is expected to play a significant role in shaping local weather dynamics over the next 48 hours. Moisture-laden winds associated with the system could enhance chances of intermittent showers in Jharkhand, especially in its northeastern and central districts.
However, weather officials have cautioned that the cyclonic circulation’s influence will be localized and may not lead to widespread or intense rainfall across the state just yet.
The anticipated rainfall will bring much-needed relief from the scorching heat that has prevailed over the past few weeks. Daytime temperatures in many parts of Jharkhand had crossed the 40°C mark in recent days, and the arrival of pre-monsoon showers is expected to moderate the mercury levels, offering temporary respite to residents.
Nevertheless, the IMD has advised citizens to remain cautious and stay updated with daily weather forecasts. Sudden shifts in weather, including brief but intense thundershowers or gusty winds, are possible, particularly in areas close to the East Bihar border.
